A group calling itself the “Christmas Critics” is having the town's first annual outdoor holiday decorating contest. The contest is free to enter, and a map or list of the participating homes will be made public so Newtowners can see them. This is not a fundraiser, and all homes entering are asked not to put out any kind of collection box, not even for charity, officials with the group said.

There are several categories, including "Merry and Bright," "Simply Elegant," "Best Theme," "Sugarplum Vision," "White Christmas," "Most Unique," "Best Outdoor Tree," "Best Doorway," "Best Window Treatment," "Old Fashioned/Retro," "Most Pumped Up (inflatables)," "Winter Wonderland," "Best Street," "Best Business" and "Most Outstanding."

The deadline for entering a house is Thursday, Dec 8. The best way to enter a home is to join the Newtown Holiday Decorating Contest Facebook page, and post your address with the other addresses already listed. If you do not have a Facebook account, please call (203) 970-1468 to register.

Homes should have on their lights starting at 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec 18. Judging will be done that night and the winners, who will have a burgundy barn star placed on the lawns, will be announced the following day.
