BROOKFIELD, Conn. -- The Brookfield-based Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority has announced the theme of its next recycling billboard contest for students – “Bags to Riches.”

The regional waste management authority serves 11 communities — including Newtown, Sherman, New Fairfield, Brookfield, Danbury, Bethel, Ridgefield and Redding — in western Connecticut. The contest is open to all students in those towns.

The regional grand prize winner will get $250, the authority said. Other winners will receive prizes of $25, $50, or $75. The grand prize winner's school district or organization will get $1,000, the authority said.

Contestants are asked to create a billboard that will help tell the public to recycle plastic bags at a local retailer.

Plastic bags, the authority said, can’t go in your regular household recycling bin because they cause problems at the recycling sorting plant.

Other rules for the contest are:

  • Do not use brand names, or names of stores in artwork.
  • Artwork must be on standard 8.5 inch by x 11 inch paper with a ½ inch margin, landscape, in color, and in any medium.
  • Use the back of this entry form to create your artwork.
  • The artist’s name, address, school, and grade must be printed on space provided to the right. Artwork missing an address will not be eligible for a regional award. The information is not shared with any other party.
  • Artwork in each school/town should be submitted to the local coordinator by Friday, Feb. 26. *
  • Home-schooled students must submit to the coordinator in their home district school or town.
