June and especially July (it's National Hot Dog month, after all) are prime times for enjoying this quintessential American favorite. The only question: Who makes 'em best?
Five "top dogs" are contenders in our DVlicious contest. Read on for a brief profile (all are being highlighted this week), then let your fingers do the clicking.
You can vote multiple times, albeit once per day. Voting ends 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 27.
Frank Talk: Around since 1946, Rawley's is a Fairfield staple -- and a celebrity in its own right. The no frills drive-in has been featured on numerous TV shows. It was, after all, a favorite of Martha Stewart, who was a frequent customer when she lived in Connecticut. It also won the Best Hot Dog in America by Examiner.com.
What makes it so popular? Folks say it's the homespun nostalgic charm, as well as the food -- cooked to order and made fresh. Plump Red Hots are deep-fried, then finished on the griddle next to toasting buns. Folks also rave over the spicy house-made relish and hot pickles. Rawley's claim to fame is "The Works," with mustard, relish and sauerkraut topped with bacon.
