Kiwanis Awards Scholarships At Kids Breakfast In Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. – The 12th annual “Kiwanis for Kids” breakfast was held Friday at the Ethan Allen Inn in Danbury.

Students were awarded scholarships in recognition of their leadership, academics and service to their communities at the Kiwanis for Kids breakfast May 1.

The Kiwanis Club of Danbury, the Kiwanis Club Foundation of Greater Danbury and their Key Clubs organized the signature fundraising event.

It was also a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Kiwanis Club. Dinesh Rajagopalan, Kiwanis Club president, gave the opening remarks. That was followed by welcome remarks from Mayor Mark Boughton. State Sen. Michael McLachlan presented the Key Club student of the year awards. George Delisle, past governor of the New England and Bermuda District of Kiwanis, gave the history of Kiwanis International.

The song “America” was led by Alexandra Prendergast, executive assistant of the New England District of Key Club. Scholarship awards were given to seven Danbury-area graduating seniors to honor their academic and community service activities during their high school careers.

The Kiwanis Club of Danbury have awarded over $60,000 in scholarship money over the past 12 years. The student of the year recognitions were awarded to the following: Nicole Shaner-Bradford, Bethel High School; Amar Patel, Brookfield High School; Jessica Wu, Danbury High School; Nathan Fields, New Fairfield High School; Lauren Wright, New Milford High School; and Jonathan Uy, Ridgefield High School.
