FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Save the Sound will celebrate the 32nd annual International Coastal Cleanup Day with several beach cleanups along the Fairfield County coast.

Volunteer registration is going on now in Fairfield, Westport, Norwalk, Stamford and Old Greenwich.

Save the Sound, a bi-state program of Connecticut Fund for the Environment, will welcome more than 1,000 volunteers to more than 50 cleanups along the state’s shoreline from the official ICC day, Sept. 16, through October.

The local events are co-hosted by civic associations, youth groups, a dive club and other environmental groups.

Every piece of trash volunteers find is tracked, reported to Save the Sound and included in the Ocean Conservancy’s annual index of global marine debris. That’s even more astounding when you consider more than 12 million volunteers have collected 228 million pounds of trash worldwide since the ICC began.

The Fairfield County beach cleanups are as follows: Pine Creek Beach, Fairfield — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sept. 16; Oyster Shell Park, Norwalk — 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sept. 16; Chimon Island, Norwalk — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sept. 17; Tod’s Point, Old Greenwich — 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., Sept. 24; Cove Island Park, Stamford — 1 to 3 p.m., Oct. 15; Boccuzzi Park, Stamford — 12 to 2 p.m., Sept. 23; Sherwood Island State Park, Westport — 2 to 4 p.m., Oct. 15.
