BETHEL, Conn. -- Bethel Supercross BMX Track will open for its 34th consecutive season of BMX bicycle racing on Wednesday, April 27.

Open House events will be held on Saturday, April 23 and Saturday, April 30, from 1-3 p.m. On Wednesdays, races start at 7 p.m.

New riders are welcome and encouraged to come learn about the sport. All they need to race is a bike, helmet, long pants and long sleeved shirt. The track offers a free one-day license for all newcomers.

Races are free for spectators.

Registration for races is held from 4:30-6:15 p.m., gate practice is from 5-6:45 p.m. and strider practice (for ages 1-5) is from 6:45-7 p.m. Strider races are held on the last section of the track.

“We welcome everyone to come see what the great sport of BMX is all about,” said Don Olson, Track Operator at Bethel Supercross BMX. “My wife Kathy and I have been involved in the track since it started 34 years ago and we’re proud to have introduced thousands of Connecticut residents to this amazing sport. We’ve seen a lot of local kids start out as beginners and over time become some of the best racers in the country. We love coming to the track every Wednesday -- it’s like having a second family with the many friends we’ve made over the years.”

BMX racing is an Olympic sport and will be featured in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio this summer.

Bethel Supercross BMX is a nonprofit organization that is in its 34th season.

Races are held on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. A wide variety of age and proficiency classes are offered. New riders of any age are welcome to participate.

Students range from 5 to 65 and there are three different proficiency levels – novice (beginner), intermediate and expert. There are also Strider (balance bike) races on the last section of the track for children ages 1-5.

Bethel Supercross BMX is located in Mitchell Park at 162 Old Hawleyville Road in Bethel. For more information, click here .
