The fire broke out at the home of Ashley and Thomas Conlan on Churchview Road in Oxford at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning. The Oxford Fire Department responded to the structure fire at the two-story home and began battling the blaze. Crews were able to contain and extinguish the fire, but the roof collapsed, according to fire officials.
Ashley Conlan was able to get out of the house safely with her three children, niece and the family dog. Thomas Conlan, who is a captain in the Wilton Police Department, was down the road visiting relatives but quickly rushed to the scene.
The family lost everything in the fire, but Ashley's cousin Alison Cubbellotti has set up a YouCaring fund to help get the family back on their feet.
"We are so grateful that everyone is safe and healthy," Cubbellotti wrote. "But, Ashley, a teacher, Thomas, a police officer, and their three children, Katie (8), Bryn (6), and Jake (3) have lost everything. They ran out of the house with no shoes, only wearing their pajamas."
"Nothing in the house is salvageable, and they now must start from the ground up rebuilding their home and their lives."
As of Thursday, the campaign had raised more than $16,000 of its $20,000 goal.
Wilton Police Chief John Lynch said in a Facebook post that in addition to monetary donations, clothing and toys would be helpful as well.
"Anyone who wishes to donate clothing and toys can bring them to the front desk at the police department," Lynch said. Monetary donations can be made online, or to the Wilton PBA or dropped off at the front desk of the police station, located 240 Danbury Road.
"Tom and his family are overwhelmed by the support and well wishes from all of you," Lynch said.
