NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The company that made the rifle used in the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown in 2012 is expected to ask a state Superior Court judge Monday to dismiss the wrongful death lawsuit filed by nine of the families, according to NBC Connecticut.

The lawsuit, filed in December 2014, says the Bushmaster AR-15 rifle should not have been made publicly available because it was made for use by the military weapon, not the public, said NBC Connecticut. The gunman killed 20 first-graders and six teachers.

Lawyers for Freedom Group, the North Carolina, company that manufactures AR-15 maker Bushmaster Firearms, said it's protected by a 2005 federal law that protects gun makers from most lawsuits over any criminal use of their products, added NBC Connecticut.
