The 4th of July, better known as Independence Day, marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the 13 colonies claimed autonomy from England.

The declaration of Independence Day as a federal holiday in 1941 started the tradition of celebrating the day with barbecues, fireworks and other leisure activities.

About two-thirds of Americans will celebrate the 4th with a barbecue, consuming about 900 million pounds of beef and chicken, according to a report by WalletHub. 

Other numbers about July 4th:

  • About 43 percent people will watch a fireworks display. 
  • July 4th is the biggest holiday for beer sales.
  • Some $6.77 billion will be spent on July 4th food.
  • 150 million pounds of hot dogs are eaten.
  • 700 million pounds of chicken is purchased in the week prior to July 4th. 
  • $4.4 million worth of flags are purchased for the holiday, most of which are made in China.
  • Over $324 million worth of fireworks are expected to be imported for July 4th to the U.S., most from China.
