Steven Flood appeared in court Friday on charges of felony murder and first-degree sexual assault in the death on May 2 of 55-year-old Susan Guido in the home they shared near Candlewood Lake in New Fairfield.

Flood, who has post-traumatic stress disorder and bipolar disorder, was on disability at the time of the murder.
Flood was arrested May 8 after he was found camping in the woods in Union, near the Massachusetts border. He told police he wanted to buy heroin and kill himself with an overdose after the murder.
Flood and Guido, who were not a couple, had met when they were both staying at a local hotel and decided to pool resources and rent the home together at 26 Candlewood Road, according to his arrest warrant.
Flood told police that he and Guido argued about food shopping and bills when he became angry, swung at Guido and knocked her to the ground. He then stopped on her head and raped her, police said.
He is charged with felony murder, murder committed in the course of sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault in a spousal or cohabiting relationship, third-degree larceny and third-degree criminal trespass. He is held on $1 million bond.
Flood is due back in court on Nov. 8, the News-Times said.
