STRATFORD, Conn. — A tax preparer from Stratford pleaded guilty in court on Thursday to preparing false federal income tax returns.

Juan Silva, 37, pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and assisting the filing of a false tax return, according to John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Joel P. Garland, Special Agent in Charge of IRS Criminal Investigation in New England.

According to court documents, Silva operated Oficina Hispana, a multi-service business that included tax return preparations. Between 2011 and 2017, he falsified itemized deductions and unreimbursed employee business expenses on numerous returns that he prepared for clients, according to Durham.

In addition, for the 2011, 2012 and 2013 tax years, Silva made substantial deposits of business receipts from his tax preparation business into his personal bank accounts, and failed to report more than $306,000 in income to the IRS, Durham said.

At his sentencing, Silva will face a maximum term of three years in prison, a fine of up to $300,000, and restitution of $143,693. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled. The IRS is also taking action to recover unpaid taxes from Silva's clients.
