BETHEL, Conn. — Services have been set for Friday for Stephen "Steve" W. Shafer, a 56-year-old from Bethel who died last week while mountain biking in a Danbury park.
Shafer, 56, died Tuesday, June 20.
He was born in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., on June 15, 1961, the son of Merrill and Elena Shafer. He was raised in Yorktown, N.Y., attending Yorktown schools and graduating from Yorktown High School in the Class of 1979.
He then graduated from Pace University with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
His career included work with Gerber Life Insurance Co. as an accountant assistant; The Insurance Corp. of New York as primary accountant; and then Trenwick America Corp., where he held the position of assistant vice president.
A resident of Bethel for the past 16 years, he enjoyed mountain biking, fishing, golf, four-wheeling, car restoration being a fan of the NY Mets.
Shafer is survived by his son, Brandon J. Shafer of Bethel; three brothers, Martin M. Shafer of Madison, Wis., Gordon A. Shafer of San Jose, Calif. and Douglas M. Shafer of Littleton, Colo.; his stepmother Marianne Lockwood Shafer of Falmouth, Mass.; two stepbrothers, Jeffrey J. Pappas of Steuben, Maine, and Judson L. Pappas of Franklin, Mass.; his aunt, Anita Mewherter of Orleans, Mass.; and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was predeceased by his loving companion Kristina Kuehn of Ridgefield, the mother of his son, Brandon.
Calling hours will be at noon Friday at the Kane Funeral Home, 25 Catoonah St., Ridgefield.
Services will follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, with the Rev. Joseph Krasinski officiating.
Burial will follow in South Salem Cemetery in South Salem, N.Y.
The family would like to thank the members of the Danbury Police Department, Danbury Fire Department and the Emergency Medical Technicians for their care and concerns.
