NEWTOWN, Conn. -- A Naugatuck woman hit and killed a black bear on June 10 while driving on I-84 in Newtown, according to the News-Times.

A 61-year-old woman was driving eastbound in the left lane with an 11-year-old passenger when the black bear tried to cross the roadway, the News-Times reported. She swerved to avoid striking the bear, but hit it in the left lane before hitting a guardrail and ending up in the median, said the News-Times.

The driver and the young girl were not hurt, but the bear died on impact, according to the News-Times. Officials are not sure if the 235-pound bear is the same one who was captured in Danbury earlier in the day and released back into the woods , added the News-Times.
