BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- A Bridgeport driver told police that she "blacked out" right before her car jumped a curb and hit two crossing guards near Geraldine Johnson Elementary School in Bridgeport on Tuesday morning, according to police.

The two guards were hit at around 8:12 a.m. while they were working the intersection, police said. A 47-year-old Bridgeport woman was traveling east on North Avenue in a 2007 Nissan Sentra when she crossed the intersection and mounted the curb, striking the two on-duty crossing guards who were standing on the sidewalk, police said.

The Nissan skidded about 40 feet before coming to a final stop at the North Avenue entrance to the People's Bank, police said.

One of the crossing guards, a 68-year-old Bridgeport man, suffered two broken legs and intracerebral hemorrhage, police said. He took the brunt of the impact from the car and was carried about 30 feet, according to police.

He was listed in critical condition, and was in surgery at St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport as of 3 p.m. Tuesday.

The second crossing guard, a 50-year-old Bridgeport woman, suffered minor injuries, police said. She was standing eastward on the sidewalk and was struck by the left side of the car, police said.

She was listed in stable condition at St. Vincent's on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The driver told police that she blacked out prior to the crash, and she was taken to Bridgeport Hospital, police said.

The first officers were on the scene two minutes after the crash. Witnesses were located and police recovered camera footage, and the Bridgeport Police Serious Crash Team responded and were assisted by members of the Southern Fairfield County Traffic Unit's Reconstruction Team.

The investigation is continuing, police said. No charges had been filed.
