The call came at 6:45 a.m. Monday to summon firefighters to the area near the Municipal Parking Garage on Delay Street to rescue a group of ducklings in a storm drain.
Upon arrival, firefighters "were met by a frantic mother duck, who was quacking hysterically for her trapped babies," said a statement from Assistant Fire Chief Mark Omasta.
The crew from Engine 22, under the direction of Lt. Chip Daly, arrived, removed the grate from the storm drain, promptly scooped up the four ducklings, and reunited them with a grateful mother duck.
The mother duck then marched her brood over toward the Still River for some swim lessons, Omasta said.
