DARIEN, Conn  -- A Darien man was charged with operating an illegal kennel out of his home where one animal died and others were subjected to abuse, unsanitary conditions and neglect, according to police.

Police were contacted in July about a possible illegal kennel operating in town, police said. The business was reported as "Terry's House of Pets," and operated out of the home of Terrance Burns, 44, of 259 Hoyt St., according to police.

There were several allegations of animal cruelty against Burns that included abuse, unsanitary conditions and neglect, and it was reported that an animal died in his care as a result of overheating, according to police.

An investigation was launched that included the town of Darien Animal Control Officer and the state of Connecticut Animal Control Authorities. Police were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Burns, and he turned himself in to police on Friday, Oct. 6.

Burns was charged with animal cruelty and operating an unlicensed kennel, and was released on a $25,000 bond. Part of the conditions of his release were that he cease any kennel operations and not care for any animals. He is due to appear in court on Oct. 16.
