Jerry Mercado, 25, had escaped from prison on Sunday, Jan. 7, lead to a full scale search by multiple public safety agencies. Mercado, who is from Hartford, had been classified as a low-risk offender, according to state police.

The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force received a tip, which was quickly communicated to law enforcement in Georgia, state police said. This tip led to police locating Mercado at a Canton gas station on Wednesday, and he was taken into custody.

Once returned to Connecticut, Mercado will be transported to the Northern Correctional Institution, where he will be referred for placement on the agency's highest level of supervision known as Administrative Segregation, state police said.
