Officers on patrol from the Fairfield Police Department stopped 21-year-old Bridgeport resident Darnell Brown’s Buick on Tunxis Road at approximately 9:50 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, after spotting his vehicle with a malfunctioning light.

During the subsequent stop, officers reported that they could smell marijuana coming from the inside of the car, and spotted Brown’s passenger, Allen Young, 22, dropping a small baggie of suspected marijuana on the floor in front of him, prompting further investigation.

The investigation determined that Young was in possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, as well as several .380 caliber bullets. A .380 caliber handgun was later found in the car, which was allegedly illegally acquired by Young - a convicted felon - who is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition.

Young was arrested and charged with illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition by a felon, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He’s currently being held on $10,000 bond. Brown was charged with misuse of plates, failure to have a stop lamp, operating a motor vehicle without a licensed driver and failure to insure motor vehicle. Brown was released at the scene.

Both men are due back in Bridgeport Superior Court on Feb. 27 to answer the charges.
