NEWTOWN, Conn. — A 67-year-old Newtown man was arrested Friday on charges of manufacturing multiple explosive devices at a mobile home park in town in what police called a "most serious and dangerous case."

Larry Bailey of 301 S. Main St. Newtown was arrested on a state warrant by Detective Daniel McAnaspie and Officer Steven Borges, along with FBI Special Agent Keith Hall at 6:30 a.m. Friday at his home without incident.

The investigation was initiated in March after the pipe bomb was located at Bailey's residence at the Newtown Village Mobile Home Park on Route 25 near Monroe, police said.

The investigation began on March 25 after two suspected pipe bombs were found in the trailer park, police said. Officers had initially responded to a complaint about vandalism to his car, and an officer spotted the likely pipe bombs, police said.

That night, the immediate area was cleared, and the Connecticut State Police Bomb Squad was called in to investigate, police said.

Members of the bomb squad safely removed the devices and rendered them safe, police said.

He was charged with two counts each of illegal possession of explosives, manufacture of bombs, and  first-degree reckless endangerment as well as one count of making a false statement.

Bailey was held on $50,000 bond and was transported to Danbury Superior Court for arraignment.

"We are very proud that our patrol officers, detectives, and agents of the FBI were able to bring this case to a close, with the arrest of Mr. Bailey," police said. "We recognize that the residents were rightfully concerned, but remained patient, while our officers worked diligently to investigate this most serious and dangerous case."
