NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The state Department of Corrections has confirmed that John Heath, 72, who was convicted two years ago for killing his wife more than 30 years ago, has died at the Osborne Correctional Institution in Somers, according to the News-Times .
Heath, formerly of Newtown, was sentenced to 50 years in prison after a Danbury jury found him guilty of beating his wife, Elizabeth Gough-Heath, to death and then hiding her body beneath a barn on Poverty Hollow Road, reported the News-Times.
The case was re-opened in 2010, when the new owner of the barn uncovered the skeletal remains of Gough-Heath during a renovation, the News-Times said.
Prison officials said Heath suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but have yet to determine the cause of his death, the News-Times added.
