Newtown's Hawleyville Fire Department Pulls Out The Stops For Open House

NEWTOWN, Conn. — More than 55 volunteer fire departments throughout Connecticut celebrated the start of National Volunteer Week over the weekend, holding open houses in an effort to boost membership.

The Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Department in Newtown was one that took part in the event.

Visitors got a chance to talk to volunteer firefighters about the work they do, check out various equipment, and get a tour of the firehouse before hopefully filling out an application.

Eighty percent of all fire personnel in Connecticut are volunteers, and the majority of fire departments throughout the state are experiencing a volunteer shortage.

Volunteer Firefighter Day is part of Everyday Hero CT, a program dedicated to increasing the number of volunteer firefighters throughout the state.

A partnership of the Connecticut Fire Chiefs Association and the International Association of Fire Chiefs , the Everyday Hero CT campaign is a two-year Volunteer Workforce Solutions initiative designed to address the shortage of volunteer firefighters in Connecticut.
