NEWTOWN, Conn. — A New Jersey man wanted for escaping from house arrest was apprehended Tuesday at a Newtown Church following a car and foot chase by police.

Newtown police were alerted around 2:45 p.m. that the New Jersey Department of Corrections was searching for Matthew R. Howarth, whose GPS ankle unit indicated he was traveling northbound on S. Main Street, police said.

Newtown officers spotted Howarth in his Ford Taurus on S. Main Street and attempted to pull him over, according to police. When he refused to stop, officers chased Howarth for a short distance to Grand Place, where they found his empty car after a concerned resident called police saying a man was running through their yard, police said.

When officers spotted Howarth on the property of St. Rose Church, he took off running again and attempted to hide under a stairway by the St. Rose School where he was taken into custody, police said.

Howarth was charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility, stop sign violation, engaging in pursuit and being a fugitive from justice.

He is being held on $100,000 bail.
