Police Stopping Suspicious Trucks At George Washington Bridge In N.J.

FORT LEE, N.J. — Port Authority police began stopping suspicious trucks and other vehicles on the New Jersey approach to the George Washington Bridge's upper level tolls Monday afternoon in the wake of the Paris terrorism attacks.

Officers are "stopping trucks or any vehicle on the approach to the bridge that just don't look right, just to be sure they aren't carrying anything dangerous."

"Through the Counter-Terrorism Initiative Operation, officers and supervisors in vests with heavy weaponry are conducting the stops due to the events in Paris at all Port Authority facilities," the authority's Joseph Pentangelo told Daily Voice.

"This is part of that."

Pentangelo said the officers are "stopping trucks or any vehicle on the approach to the bridge that just don't look right, just to be sure they aren't carrying anything dangerous."

Different approaches were being taken at various ports and crossings, including at the airports in Newark and New York City, at cargo ports and around authority-patrolled bus terminals and train stations -- including at the World Trade Center, where a vigil for the Paris victims was behind held Monday afternoon.

"Travelers are reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to police or other authorities," Pentangelo said.

The George Washington Bridge operation began just before 2:30 p.m.
