Troopers are reminding drivers that combining careful planning with sensible driving will leader to safer holidays. Simply following traffic laws will prevent accidents and save lives.
Motorists should drive the speed limit and keep a safe distance between vehicles. Ensure all passengers are wearing seatbelts. Signal when turning, changing lanes or taking an exit. Never text or use your phone while driving. Never consume alcohol or drugs before getting behind the wheel. Move over whenever law enforcement, fire trucks, ambulances or tow trucks are occupying a lane and give them room to do their jobs safely and efficiently.
Drivers are also reminded to plan their trips with care. Fill gas tanks prior to long journeys, and check windshield wipers, wiper fluid and tire pressure. Fully charge your phone before leaving. Carry winter blankets, drinking water and snack. Check traffic conditions before leaving home. Keep a shovel and sand or salt in the trunk of your car.
"Your cooperation is critical to ensuring the well-being of all who are driving our highways and roads throughout the holiday weekend. Whenever you get behind the wheel, safety must be your top priority," state police said.
State police will also be conducting roving patrols and DUI checkpoints beginning Friday, Dec. 22 and continuing through the Christmas and New Year's holidays. Troopers will enforce all laws and focus on reducing the number of DUIs, crashes and injury-producing accidents on interstates, state roads and local roadways.
