The large fire broke out at about 5:30 p.m. Monday in a home at 46 Alden St. and spread to a second home in the densely populated neighborhood beside the hospital, firefighters said.

Stamford firefighters were battling the massive blaze for over two hours until it was extinguished.

Nearby neighbor Gabrian Holloway told the Stamford Advocate that he rescued two people who were trapped on the roof of one of the burning homes.

Two people and five firefighters were treated for heat-related problems, according to NBC Connecticut.

"All companies [will be] operating for some time," the Stamford Fire Department said via Twitter @SFDPIO.

"All companies working for extended time, multiple units operating at the scene. 2 houses involved," Stamford Fire‏ said via Twitter.

The Stamford Fire Department said via Twitter that by then, the inferno had grown into a five-alarm fire.

Firefighters said the neighborhood where the huge blaze broke out is very densely populated, with houses close together. It is presenting "significant challenges for firefighters," the department said via Twitter.

NBC Connecticut had aerial shots of the fire on its Facebook showing flames shooting from the roof of both houses and smoke engulfing the area around Stamford Hospital.

It is not known how the fire started, NBC Connecticut said.
