Newtown Rep. Sredzinski Hails Historic Override of Malloy's Vetoes

MONROE, Conn. -- State Rep. J.P. Sredzinski (R-112) joined his colleagues in the General Assembly in voting Monday to override Gov. Dannel Malloy’s vetoes on a number of bills passed by the legislature during the 2016 session.

Out of the eight gubernatorial vetoes issued by Malloy, three were overridden by both chambers of the General Assembly.

“These bills were all originally approved with either unanimous or near unanimous support during the regular session, because members of both parties saw their merits,” said Sredzinski, who represents Newtown and Monroe in the state House.

“I am particularly pleased that we overrode the governor’s veto on Public Act 16-32, which will give legislators a tool to see how potential legislation will affect small businesses before we cast our votes.”

PA 16-32 will require the nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis to include an estimate of the number of businesses that would be affected by a piece of legislation in their preparation of fiscal notes on bills.

In addition to PA 16-32, both chambers also voted to override the vetoes on Special Act 16-8, which centers on non-emergency medical transportation for Medicaid recipients, and PA 16-113, which concerns the appointment of principal investment officers to assist the state chief investment officer.

Sredzinski noted the historic nature of the override, which marked the first time during Malloy’s tenure in office that the legislature has overridden one of his vetoes.

“Today was certainly a historic day in the legislature as we saw members of the governor’s own party hurry to distance themselves from him in the wake of his disastrously low approval ratings,” he said. “I just wish that some of these same legislators had shown this kind of gumption in standing up to the governor on some of his other policy choices, namely the budget adopted in June 2015.”
