Planned Parenthood's Cecile Richards Stumps For Clinton In Stamford

STAMFORD, Conn. — Cecile Richards is spending “every waking volunteer hour” criss-crossing the country, stumping for Hillary Clinton for president. Friday was no different.

She stopped by the Parkway Diner in Stamford to express her support for Clinton, particularly for her advocacy for women’s health issues.

Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, called Clinton an “incredible champion” of women's health issues.

“She introduced eight separate bills to advance women's reproductive healthcare access when she was in the Senate and that’s eight more than anybody running for president of the United States today,” Richards told a group of supporters, who included state Rep. Caroline Simmons and Fran Pastore, CEO of the Women's Business Development Council.

While Richards said the other Democratic hopeful, U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, has “always been a solid vote for us,” she believes Clinton has been “head and shoulders” above any other candidate in her advocacy for women’s health issues.

Richards said she likes to remind college students about improvements in access to emergency contraceptive care since Clinton took office in the Senate.

“It was only a few years ago that actually you couldn’t get emergency contraception in this country unless you had a doctor’s note,” Richards said.

She said Clinton and U.S. Sen. Patty Murray held up an FDA appointment to make emergency contraceptive accessible 24/7 over the counter in pharmacies nationwide.

“I think that Hillary Clinton is large part of the reason that happened,” Richards said.

Due to these efforts, Richards said unintended pregnancies are at a 30-year low and teen pregnancies are at a 40-year low.

Richards took on GOP hopeful and Ohio Gov. John Kasich during her talk. While he claims to be a moderate on women’s reproductive health issues, she doesn’t believe that’s the case.

“He has signed 18 different bills to restrict women's access to healthcare, including the most recent one in the state of Ohio that actually denies women — expecting mothers — the ability to go to Planned Parenthood for care,” Richards said. “That’s how extreme he is.”
