FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- With World Teachers' Day right around the corner, educators in Connecticut can be glad that they live in the fourth best state for teachers, according to a new study by the personal finance website WalletHub.

The new ranking by WalletHub, 2017's Best & Worst States for Teachers, uses data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia to find the states with the best opportunities and teaching environments in the country. The site looked at 21 key metrics, ranging from teacher's income growth potential to pupil-teacher ratio to teacher safety.

Connecticut came in fourth overall in the ranking, which named New York the best state for teachers and Arizona as the worst. Connecticut ranked second in "Academic and Work Environment" and 21st in "Opportunity and Competition."

Here's how Connecticut ranked in other categories of teacher friendliness:

  • Average annual salary for teachers (adjusted for cost of living): 19th
  • Quality of school system: 8th
  • Pupil-teacher ratio: 8th
  • Public school spending per student: 4th
  • 10-year change in teacher salaries: 19th
  • Teacher safety: 12th
