FAIRFIELD, Conn. — “The confluence of the Blue Nile and the White Nile rivers lies near what African capital city?”

Could you have answered the tie-breaker question that left a team from Fairfield Warde High School just one point shy of winning the 26th annual Connecticut High School Geography Challenge?

The team of five talented Warde students came home with an impressive second place finish just behind 2017 champs South Windsor High School on Tuesday.

Eighteen high schools from around Connecticut competed in the hotly contested event hosted by the Connecticut Geographic Alliance at UConn’s Storrs campus. This year’s theme was Fresh Water.

Students Sian Auer, Dustin Brown, Peter Cullen and Owen Edminster made up the Fairfield Warde team. Their coach was social studies teacher Robert Mendenhall.

Bethel High School, Danbury High School and Ridgefield High School also competed.

And the answer to the tie-breaker? Khartoum, Sudan.
