NEWTOWN, Conn. -- Newtown school officials held a retreat on Saturday to discuss whether closing an elementary school would help with the districts declining school enrollment numbers, according to the Newstimes.

School Superintendent Joe Erardi received ideas from Board of Education members, ranging from shuttering a school to reconfiguring the district's buildings for public use, or for an early childhood center, said the Newstimes.

Newtown’s school population has dropped steadily in recent years, and a recent study showed it could expect about 200 less students per year over the next five years, added the Newstimes.
