Stratford Restaurateurs Find Second Careers In Home Health Care Business

STRATFORD, Conn. -- It's not as different as you may think to go from running a restaurant to managing a home health care business, at least according to Michael Savoie.

The Stratford resident owns Executive Home Care with his mother, Camille, and sister, Robin, who live in Trumbull.

The Savoie family has extensive entrepreneurial experience as the former owners of Stella’s Italian Restaurant, which appeared on the Food Network’s “Restaurant Impossible.”

After 27 years in the hospitality business, the family saw a need for a professional home health care service and decided to open an Executive Home Care territory in Stratford in October 2014.

Now, with three years of successful business behind them, and having earned Hearst Media’s Top Small Business Employer Award in 2017, they are continuing to expand Executive Home Care’s local footprint with the opening of their second location—this time in Norwalk.

The location opened Oct. 1.

“More and more people have become aware that in-home care might be a better choice for them or an elderly loved one than moving out to a nursing home or other type of senior care facility," said Michael.

"At Executive Care, we offer top of the line live-in home care services, and tailor our type of care to exactly suit individual needs."

Services range from companionship and help with meal preparation and household chores to help with bathing, personal hygiene, and personal care. Executive Care also serves individuals recovering from illness, injury or surgery.

As for the difference between the two businesses, Michael said the common thread is the need to take care of one's employees.

"They are a reflection of you," he said.

"It is a fine line, but your employees must become almost like family. They will feel the bond in their hearts and a bond of trust is formed.”

In fact, Michael says he wishes the family had transitioned into home care earlier.

"We want to be advocates for the unfair stereotyping and lend awareness to the increased problem of ageism," he said.

"Our seniors are to be revered and cherished, not just pushed aside.”

Founded in 2004, Executive Care, based in Hackensack, N.J., offers a variety of caregiving and nursing services to help families often overwhelmed with the responsibility of providing care to a loved one – all while ensuring the patient remains in the comfort of his or her own home.
