FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- The week between Christmas and New Year's is often a slow one, but Fairfield County still saw its share of crime and other news.

Here are some of the most-read stories of the week, as reported by the Daily Voice.

Five people were charged with attempting to break into cars in Westport on Tuesday. Police said that they crashed into a police cruiser while trying to escape the scene, but were eventually tracked down and taken into custody.

Two people were injured and seven were displaced after a fire broke out at a home in Fairfield on Christmas night. The home on Morehouse Lane was completely destroyed. Firefighters were brought in from several surrounding towns to combat the blaze.

A Bridgeport man was charged with sexually assaulting two sisters who he met through Facebook. Police said that 47-year-old Raymond Ortiz sent the young girls videos of himself, and then approached them at a barbecue and assaulted them.

Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim is expected to announce his run for governor this week. Ganim served five terms as Bridgeport's mayor, then seven years in prison on felony corruption charges, before running and winning re-election in 2015.

Police identified a 22-year-old man who was shot to death in Bridgeport last Saturday. Police said Khali Davis of Fairfield Avenue was standing in front of a store on Maple Street when a shooter approached on foot and opened fire. Davis ran into the store and collapsed, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 51-year-old Ridgefield man was charged with sexually assaulting a minor in Norwalk. Police said Jose Recinos had sexual contact with the minor on two occasions several years ago.

A new German beer hall is set to open its doors in Bridgeport. Harlan House will serve up beers, pretzels, schnitzels, and wursts beginning Jan. 10.

A Danbury man was charged last week with stealing a minivan in Newtown in early November. Police said Osvaldo Lopez snatched the keys from a 10-year-old girl and drove off, even after her father jumped on the hood and tried to stop him from leaving.
