Ellen Cotter, 67, Danbury Teacher

DANBURY, Conn. -- Ellen M. Cotter, a Danbury native, died in her home Dec. 30 after a brief battle with cancer. She was 67. 

Cotter was born in Danbury on Feb. 17, 1948, to Dr. Felix and Anne (Bezurzyk) Tomaino.

She attended St. Peter's School and was a graduate of Central Catholic High School in Norwalk. She earned a bachelor of arts in sociology from Trinity College in Washington D.C., a master's of science in education from Western Connecticut State University, and a sixth-year certificate in education from the Southern Connecticut State University. Additionally, she held a certificate in library science from Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass. 

Throughout her career, Cotter held teaching positions in the Danbury Public School system and numerous private schools in the area. She also spent many years teaching English as a second language to adults and children.

Cotter is survived by her children, Elizabeth F. Cotter of Danbury, and Sean R. Cotter, of Manhattan; granddaughter, Olivia B. Cotter of Danbury; sister Ann Ameling of San Francisco; nephew Michael Slavinsky of San Francisco; and her former husband, Brian E. Cotter of Danbury.

Funeral services are private at the direction of the family. There will be no calling hours. 

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Danbury Animal Welfare Society, or to Regional Hospice and Homecare.
