STAMFORD, Conn. — A 19-year-old man who escaped an ambush on High Street in Stamford on Jan. 19 thought the coast was clear when he entered a West Side bodega about 15 minutes later, police said. But he didn’t know his hunters had followed him into the store, police said.

In an execution-style assassination attempt, a shooter put a gun to the teen's head and pulled the trigger, police said. But in a split second, the victim turned his head, police said. The bullet entered his left temple and another bullet hit lower torso before he collapsed as his two assailants fled the West Main Convenience store, police said.

On Friday, Stamford Police charged Tyriek Gantt, 19, of Connecticut Avenue, Stamford, with two counts of attempted murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder, said Lt. Tom Barcello of the Stamford Police. Police expect to arrest a second man next week in the shooting, Barcello said.

The violent incident was spurred by a dispute between the victim and his attackers, he said.

"There was some kind of rift between them, but I don’t know what it was about,” Barcello said.

The victim was initially in critical condition, but he is now out of the hospital, he said. The teen is able to walk and talk although he has to undergo extensive therapy, Barcello said..

“His eyesight and speaking is affected, but he is alive,” Barcello said.

The arrest is just the latest one in the short, violent career of Gantt, who was also charged in connection with the robbery and shooting of a Chinese food delivery driver in Norwalk in January. Norwalk police have charged another man with shooting and wounding the driver. Gantt was also charged in connection with another robbery of a second Chinese food delivery driver in Norwalk, also in January.

Stamford Police had also charged Gantt with arson after he was seen pouring gas into a vehicle stolen from a Bridgeport food delivery driver in January. Shortly after that gas station video was recorded, the vehicle was discovered burning in Stamford, police said.

Gantt is also facing charges in connection with a police pursuit in Bridgeport in January.
