The Connecticut State Police are investigating two fatal accidents on the state's highways over the long weekend for the New Year's holiday.

An Ansonia man collapsed and died after a crash on Route 8 in Trumbull, and a Glastonbury woman after she was ejected from her car on the Putnam Bridge, state police said.

State police have increased patrols for the busy travel time from 12:01 a.m. Friday, Jan. 29, through 11:59 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1.

Here are the state police statistics on traffic enforcement through 7:30 a.m. Monday:

  • Speeding violations: 490
  • Seatbelt violations: 17
  • All moving violations: 1,169 (including unsafe lane change, following too closely, cellphone use, texting, failure to signal, etc.)
  • DUI arrests: 23
  • Accidents investigated:   419
  • Accidents with injuries: 46
  • Accidents with fatalities: 2
  • Motorist Assists: 397
  • Total calls for service: 5,676

In the Trumbull accident, an Ansonia man was killed Friday when he drove his pickup truck into the back of a box truck on Route 8, state police said.

William Pollock, 55, of Lester Street, was initially conscious and alert after the 5:30 p.m. crash, but he quickly became unresponsive and was pronounced dead at Bridgeport Hospital, police said.

The crash occurred just north of Exit 8 in the southbound lanes when Pollock’s 1996 Ford Ranger rear-ended a box truck in the right lane and became entangled with the first truck, police said.

The box truck driver pulled off to the shoulder, dragging Pollock’s truck, police said. Once stopped, Pollock was able to get out of his truck, but he became unresponsive within minutes, state police said. The other driver was not injured.

At about 8:15 p.m. Saturday, a Glastonbury woman was killed in a crash on the Putnam Bridge on Route 3. Devra Koromanian, 51, was driving just before the Interstate 91 off-ramp when she lost control of her vehicle and hit the jersey barrier, state police said.

Koromanian was ejected from the vehicle. She died later of her injuries at Hartford Hospital, state police said.

For comparison, here are the statistics from state police from last year, from 12:01 Dec. 30, 2016, through 11:59 p.m. Jan. 2, 2017:

  • Accidents: 276
  • Accidents with injuries: 34
  • Accidents with fatalities: Two accidents resulting in 3 fatalities
  • DUI arrests: 34
  • Speeding: 705
  • Seatbelt violations: 15
  • All moving violations: 1,800
  • Motorist Assists: 270
  • Total calls for service: 6,987

State police troopers focus on enforcing all motor vehicle laws in an effort to reduce the number of DUIs, crashes and injury-producing accidents occurring on the interstates, state roads and local roadways over the busy holiday weekends.
