The car thieves then led officers on a chase — with police lights and sirens on — that ended with three arrests but not before two nearby schools were placed on a lockdown, police said.

The incident began at about 9:50 a.m. Friday on Austin Street, police said.

The owner's wife had started the car and then gone back into her house to retrieve an item, police said. Three juveniles then jumped into the Nissan but were confronted by the male owner, police said.

That is when the male suspect pulled out a knife and the suspects took off in the car with a juvenile female behind the wheel, police said.

An officer shortly thereafter spotted the car heading north on Tamarack Avenue, police said.

He activated his emergency lights and siren, but the driver continued on in the stolen Nissan, police said.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle near Hawley Road, but it was located unoccupied a short time later on Hawley Road. Extension, police said.

A number of officers, assisted by the Connecticut State Police, responded to the area near the PAL building after  three individuals were spotted running in that area, police said.

Officers apprehended two female juveniles and one juvenile male, and the victim confirmed the identities of the three suspects, police said.

The suspects were arrested on the following charges:

  • A juvenile male was charged with third-degree larceny, third-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, second-degree robbery and second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery.
  • Juvenile female #1 was charged with third-degree larceny, third-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, second-degree robbery and second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery.
  • Juvenile Female #2 was charged with third-degree larceny, third-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, second-degree robbery, second-degree conspiracy to commit robbery, reckless driving, disobeying signal of an officer and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Hayestown Elementary School and St. Gregory School were briefly placed on lockdown during the incident, police said.
