At nearly 3 a.m. Sunday, officers with the Danbury Police Department responded to a larceny call from the Shannon Ridge area -- and ended up catching two of three suspects accused of rifling through a resident's car, police said.
According to police, a homeowner confronted three suspects who were going through his vehicle.
The suspects eluded the officers on an initial foot pursuit, and the officers set up a perimeter. With help from a Connecticut State Police K-9 unit, officers found two of the suspects, who were hiding on Concord Street, police said.
The investigation revealed that several vehicles in the area had been broken into, police said.
The department said that one suspect, who is 14 years old, has been charged with sixth-degree larceny, sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal trespass, third-degree criminal mischief, breach of the peace and interfering with a police officer.
The 17-year-old suspect was charged with sixth-degree larceny, sixth-degree conspiracy to commit larceny, third-degree burglary, third-degree criminal trespass, third-degree criminal mischief, breach of the peace, interfering with a police officer and credit card theft.
Both have court dates in Juvenile Court in Bridgeport on Nov. 14, and police said the investigation is ongoing.
The Danbury Police Department added these reminders for residents:
- Don't leave items on display in your car, whether or not they're particularly valuable. Thieves steal first and think about value later, smashing a car window just to look inside a bag or box, to see if it contains anything valuable.
- Don't leave garage door activators in your parked car. This gives thieves an opportunity to also steal from your house.
- Lock all doors and close all windows and the sunroof every time you leave your car unattended.
