The call for the fire came in around 10:40 a.m. Wednesday at 54 Ives Court, said Bridgeport Fire Assistant Chief Rich D'Onofrio.

When firefighters arrived they found a kitchen fire on the second floor which seemed to be fueled by natural gas, the chief said.

The one resident of the home was outside when the department arrived on the scene and was suffering from either smoke inhalation or a brunt throat, officials said.

He was treated at the scene by AMR personnel and transported to the hospital.

D'Onofrio said there was a broken water line upstairs and no working smoke detectors in either home. All utilities had to be cut to the building, displacing the downstairs resident who was being taken care of by the Red Cross.

"We had a hoarding situation going on upstairs so the Board of Health was contacted," the chief said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage was contained to the second-floor kitchen.
