Lt. Kevin Kennedy, who retired last year after 34 years of service with the Bethel Police Department, shot himself to death shortly after 9 p.m., according to a release from the Bethel Police Department.

"Bethel Police responded to the Plumtrees Heights Condominium Complex after receiving a call from family concerning Kennedy's welfare," the statement said. "Police responded and located Kennedy on the complex grounds. After a brief dialogue with responding Bethel officers, Kennedy shot himself using a personal firearm."

He was transported to Danbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

"Our officers and their families are devastated by this loss," the statement said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Kennedy family right now."

This was the second suicide in recent weeks involving a police officer. In May, Westport police Sgt. Bob Myer killed himself in his Newtown home. His family is working to prevent more suicides.
