RIDGEFIELD, Conn. — A Ridgefield man will step into the national spotlight at the Republican National Convention in Cleveland next week as one of the convention's three Sergeant-at-Arms, the Republican National Committee recently announced.

State Rep. John Frey, who represents the 111th District, will serve alongside Bruce Hough, national committeeman from Utah, and Shawn Steel, national committeeman from California, the committee said.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said he was pleased to have Frey, Hough and Steel serve the roles of Sergeant-at-Arms.

“I’m excited to have John, Bruce, and Shawn all serving as the Sergeant-at-Arms for our Convention,” Priebus said. “Each of them are distinguished for their service as National Committeemen, and they are going to bring the same spirit of leadership into Cleveland that will help ensure an orderly and well-run Convention.”

Frey, Hough and Steel will be responsible for the maintenance of order at the convention, the committee said.

Frey has served as a committeeman for the Connecticut Republican State Central Committee since 2000. He has served in various roles in the Connecticut Republican Party since the 1980s.

Frey was re-elected on Nov. 4, 2014, and is serving his ninth term as state representative. He was also reappointed by the House Minority Leader Themis Klarides to serve as minority whip.

As one of three Connecticut superdelegates, Frey has said he will vote for Donald Trump as the party's presidential candidate at the GOP national convention, The Ridgefield Press previously reported.

Frey said Trump was not his first choice, but he is voting according to how Connecticut Republicans voted in the primary, according to the Ridgefield Press.
